Ken Cormier, In His Own Words: When my wife Julie rented a 4-track machine for my 24th birthday, I sat down and began composing and recording the songs that would eventually become God Damn Doghouse. I wore out the little machine and then purchased one of my own within weeks of returning the rental. Recording in our small apartment in Ypsilanti, Michigan, I was compelled to use household items and electronic drum pads in my arrangements. Once I had collected enough material, I mastered the whole thing at a friend’s apartment in a few hours one Spring afternoon, and released it on cassette tape in 1995.

"God Damn Doghouse, is a testament to the wonders of 4-track recording."

–-Williamette Week, Portland, OR

Elis Eil Records’ CD release of God Damn Doghouse, (order) contains several bonus tracks, all recorded between 1992 and 1995 in our Ypsilanti apartment. To me, God Damn Doghouse is a document of moments that dwell in between the lines of our everyday activities. I recorded the tracks for "The Lumberyard" while waiting for a telephone repairman to come and work on our static-filled connection; "Night Time" contains narration from my journals recounting my experiences on the Ann Arbor bus line; and "Aimless" was born from long walks on railroad tracks and through empty neighborhoods on sleepy weekday afternoons. I want listeners to find in God Damn Doghouse a few, undeniable bits of themselves, and if they can’t manage that, then they should keep listening until they do.

"Imagine if McMurphy from Kesey’s, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest" were allowed to make an album… God Damn Doghouse displays the energy that was given up for lost with the Violent Femmes in the 80s."

–-Grass Roots Entertainment, Decatur, GA

Thanks, Julie, for that excellent gift back in Michigan. Without a 4-track machine around, these banal and random thoughts collect like dust in forgotten closets, and household items look less like musical instruments and more like everyday life.
